The F Word: Chris Cleverley

The Black Swan Bar and Venue, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Chris Cleverley delivers boundary-shattering ‘Dream-Folk’ that sits on the cutting edge of acoustic music. A true guitar-man, his breathtaking fingerstyle technique dances above lush ambient soundscapes, drawing comparisons ranging from Lo-fi American greats, Elliott Smith & Sufjan Stevens, to UK guitar royalty John Martyn & Nic Jones. A curious tapestry weaved from the hazy psychedelia of the 60s folk revival and the soulful oblivion of the 90s Pacific Northwest.

His songs explore powerful, human themes from displaced people to the fragile beauty of our natural world. We travel with him from the arid deserts of Syria, to the rich Mediterranean sunsets of the Cretan coastline; a captivating voyage of place, landscape, season and self.

With five nationally acclaimed records under his belt, and ringing endorsements from The Times, Telegraph and BBC6 Music, 2x FATEA ‘Male Artist of the Year’, Chris Cleverley is described:

– “One of the most vital voices of his Folk generation” and with a “brand of folk that is fluid and exploratory” – KLOF

– “Sophisticated acoustic riffs of that truly independent variety… Cleverley has succeeded and brought about great vision to the promising steps of a new range of form. Broadcast the Secret Verse is filled with quality that will nestle well with those needing an intimate, acoustic soundscape that relies just as much on strings as it does on the qualities Cleverley presents throughout. Delicate, refined and truly touching work.” – Cult Following

– “So fine and compassionate you won’t be brought down, the outlook is honest but positive. Cleverly delivers an extremely well crafted production, the quality of mixing and performance is very high with many competent collaborators lending their talents to some of the tracks… You will not be disappointed.” – on his album Broadcast the Secret VerseSlap Mag

Part of Newcastle Art Centre’s folk programme The F Word, hosted in our Black Swan Bar & Venue…

The F Word is a monthly Folk programme and Club at Newcastle Arts Centre. It offers lovers of Folk an opportunity to see top musicians, as well as hear local Folk artists sharing new music in the ‘Floor Spots’ ahead of the headline act. This new night celebrates the genre of Folk, programmes top talent, and connects audiences to new musicians.

WHAT ARE THE FLOOR SPOTS?

The F Word will champion emerging, local Folk artists. Each night will kick off with supporting ‘Floor Spots’, hosted by Alasdair Paul (DIY Ceilidh, Pons Aelius) and dedicated for North East based Folk musicians who wants to share their sound with a new audience.

If you’re a Folk artist based in the North East and are interested in sharing something new with an audience, we’d love to hear from you.

You could be just starting out on your musical journey into the world of Folk, you could be ‘emerging’ on to the scene, or you could be a seasoned Folk musician with new stuff to share.

Just email us at admin@newcastle-arts-centre.co.uk – introduce yourself, what you play, a bit about your experience and which of the above nights you’d be interested in performing a Floor Spot.
