Irreverent Audience

This workshop challenges the fundamentals of improvisation by removing the visible stage and turning listening, reacting and collective creation into the main engines of storytelling. It experiments with improvisation by forcing the players to build an invisible show with only interpersonal dynamics, exploring subtext, relationships and emergent storytelling. It also develops extreme adaptation, as improvisers must react organically to what others ‘see’ and maintain the illusion of a cohesive show without any concrete visual reference.

Levels: PG+AG+IN + AV/PF
PG - GENERAL PUBLIC: People without any artistic experience, and Artists in General and All Levels in Impro.
AG - ARTISTS IN GENERAL: Professional artists or artists in training with no specific experience in Impro.
IN - IMPRO BEGINNER: People who already have some experience with Impro courses and/or performances.
AV/PF - ADVANCED/PROFESSIONAL IN IMPRO: People with a few years' experience and/or a career in Impro.

About Mário Abel:

Mário Abel has an Actor-Theatre degree from the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema since 2012. At IMPROVISO, he trained with Gustavo Miranda (OS BARBIXAS/Commedia à la Carte) and Daniel Nascimento (OS BARBIXAS), with Omar Argentino (IMPROTOUR), Laura Doornerweerd (IMPRO AMSTERDAM) and Stephanie Jacob (The PIT-NYC) among others. He took part as a guest improviser in the IRREVERENTE festivals (FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE IMPROVISO DE LISBOA) in 2022 and 2024. He co-created and co-founded the improvisation comedy group IMPROVISTO in 2014. In 2016 he co-created and co-produced NIM - FESTIVAL NOITES IMPREVISTAS, a festival in Queluz dedicated to the best of improvised comedy in Portugal. He was a guest teacher/improviser at the ImproTresk festival (Impro BRNO, Czech Rep) in 2012. He regularly works with corporate improvisation, giving training and facilitating training sessions through the sharing and insights provided by improvisation theatre, and as an actor in role plays for emotional training, with GRUPO PESTANA, PWC and HOSPITAIS LUSÍADAS as his main clients. More recently, on the South Bank, he gave an improvisation workshop at CEA, from May to June 2024, and improvisation theatre classes at the ArteViva school in Barreiro.
